With so many troubling things happening in the world, some clients have inquired about ways to enhance their security. While we don’t want to encourage paranoia, there are many legitimate threats, and everyone will have their own levels of concern.
The effort and inconvenience that different people are willing to endure also vary. Higher levels of security often necessitate significant effort and inconvenience. We have divided our list of suggestions—roughly organized from easiest to hardest—into two sections: actions we believe everyone should take and security measures mainly for those most concerned and willing to tolerate some fuss.
Before we delve into the details, it is important to remember that privacy and security are not the same. Privacy refers to the proper collection, use, and governance of personal data. Security, conversely, is concerned with protecting data from unauthorized access and malicious threats. It entails defending data against external dangers, while privacy ensures that the management and use of that data adheres to agreed-upon standards.
Security Improvements for Everyone
These actions are generally beneficial for most users. They don’t require much technical knowledge and can often be accomplished with easily accessible tools and settings:
• Keep apps and operating systems up to date – Nearly every operating system update from Apple addresses security vulnerabilities. Always ensure you’re running current versions.
• Enable FileVault – Encrypt your Mac’s data so that a login password is required for decryption. Enable it in System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault.
• Improve your passcode – If you’re still using a four-digit iPhone passcode, switch to six digits, a custom numeric code, or an alphanumeric passcode for stronger security.
• Turn on biometric authentication and Stolen Device Protection – Face ID and Touch ID significantly enhance security and should be enabled in Settings > Face/Touch ID & Passcode.
• Adopt strong password habits – Use unique, strong passwords for all accounts, managed by a password manager like Apple’s Passwords or 1Password.
• Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) – MFA adds an extra layer of security, preventing unauthorized access even if a password is compromised.
• Use an ad blocker – Many online threats stem from advertisements. Consider using 1Blocker, AdGuard, NextDNS, or uBlock Origin.
• Enable privacy and security features in web browsers – Safari and privacy-focused browsers like Brave or Firefox offer built-in tracking protection.
• Utilize secure DNS services – Configure your network to use privacy-focused DNS services like Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1or Quad9’s 9.9.9.9.
• Minimize app exposure –
• Disable tracking in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
• Limit location tracking in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
• Remove apps that are unused or unnecessary.
Security Improvements for the Particularly Concerned
For those facing heightened risks—such as journalists, activists, or individuals handling sensitive data—these additional measures provide stronger protection:
• Use independent search engines – Google and Microsoft collect user data; alternatives like DuckDuckGo and Brave Search, prioritize privacy.
• Protect network traffic – Enable iCloud Private Relay (for Safari) or use a VPN such as NordVPN, or ProtonVPN.
• Activate Advanced Data Protection – End-to-end encryption (E2EE) for iCloud data can be enabled in Settings > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection.
• Use encrypted messaging – iMessage with Advanced Data Protection
• Regularly review and revoke permissions – Check app permissions under Settings > Privacy & Security and remove unnecessary access.
• Encrypt cloud-stored data – Services like Cryptomator can encrypt files before uploading to Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive.
• Use encrypted email – Services like ProtonMail and Tuta Mail provide end-to-end encryption.
• Reduce reliance on cloud services – Consider peer-to-peer alternatives for file sharing and collaboration.
• Avoid social media – Social media platforms track and collect data. Independent forums and private messagingprovide better privacy.
